Teaser Tuesday - it's been a long time...

It's been way too long since I participated in a Teaser Tuesday post - I miss doing these.  I'm a day late on this, but better late than never....(sometimes)
Hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading, we post short teasers (of course, no spoilers should be posted) of books we're currently reading.

by Jon Skovron

"Humans are pretty complicated," I said.

"No, Boy.  Rain-forest ecosystems are complicated.  Humans are just a mess."

*a teen aged son of Frankenstein - stitched together (of course!), first love, monsters, men.... to quote George Takei...  Oh Myyy!  According to one of the book blurbs, this is a "...mashup of Old World myth and post-modern techno-geek..."   That's good enough for me; and love the cover!

Another read is from the Steampunk Trails first edition

edited by J.A. Campbell
from a story by Mike Cervantes
The Scarlet Derby and Midnight Jay
page 57

Mary, on the other hand, wielded a parasol.  What was its special function?  Nothing.  It was merely a parasol.

*in 1898 London, a husband and wife fight evil with the help of chemicals (her husband's) and a parasol.  There's more to the story, but I like my synopsis.  *grin*  You can click on cover for link to buy, click on Mike's name for link to his comic strip, click on Steampunk above for link to amazon and excerpt and click on J.A. Campbell's name above for her website where there is lots of goodies to explore.

And I leave you with....Vampire Kitty!

It's Monday....and I'm back - sort of.

Here we are again - it's a Monday.  I've never been crazy about Mondays, even during the summer on my work "vacation" (in this case, meaning two months without pay, meaning we don't actually get to go anywhere...{boohoo} would be nice to be able to afford to go even on a small trip.  I'm hoping to make a day trip to the beach soon).  Because even during the summer, each Monday brings me closer to the start of another year of working - which I used to love, but now the only thing I like about it is the kids - definitely, I haven't been enjoying one of my supervisors.  But then - at least I get to do some things that are fun.  The library work is fun.  Lunch duty - while frustrating at times, can still be fun, especially when the kids are all playing and enjoying the day.   I know I'm sounding a little em0 about things - but it's a passing thing.

I missed the last Monday post because of some emotional dips - I lost a grandfather (he was 106 years old), who I was only able to see a few times - and even then only because other people paid for me to fly to Panama twice.  For that I'm completely grateful.  But it's kind of sad to know he's gone, and to know that my mom has taken it very hard.  But life goes on for the rest of us, so far anyway.  So we all need to make the most of our lives, which is something I've been trying to do - and trying to remind my husband for at least 25 years (we've been married for 34 years, but he's turned into a bit of a bitter guy when life gets tough-and that's hard to live with - shit, now I'm sounding bitter, damnit!)

So let's get to it! Enough with the Emo Nemo shit.
But now - it's time for...  It's Monday, What Have You Been Reading? hosted by Sheila of Book Journey.  Unfortunately, I can't link yet to a Monday post for Book Journey, so I'll temporarily link to the Book Journey site.

In the last two weeks I finished reading:
**remember - click on covers for excerpts or website**

Sabaska's Tale
teen fantasy (with the coolest horse ever).  At first available as an e-book, you can now purchase this in print, via CreateaSpace.  Worth buying people, especially if you AND any teens in the family like horses! (and good writing)

On Basilisk Station
SciFi (the first Honor Harrington novel)
I enjoyed it - even with the occasional lengthy explanations of...stuff. ;)

Pretty Sacrifices
Y/A,UF (post pandemic plot)

Show Dog Sings the Blues
(What if your show dog gets mixed up with her sister, the working ranch dog?) A fun novella.
Roil
fantasy (OMG - what a strange world!)
What a strange, weirdly good book.

My Current Reads:

I'm currently reading a book on my Kindle - the second Honor book, The Honor of the Queen, which seems to be slower going than the first...Just when I thought I was done....here comes more.  Which is okay - because it's pretty interesting.

I'm also working on another David Weber book - one in print, called In Fury Born - it's a book and a prequel all packaged into one thick novel.  Unfortunately - THIS one seems to have way more lengthy
info dumps for such things as weapons, military positioning, political background, the inner thoughts of Alicia's pleasure or displeasure of her weapons, etc.  That makes it hard for me to keep going, but I want to -because I know if I can get through that, there's action coming up.  I finished the prequel part, and that was pretty good....but I just keep dozing off when I'm reading those damned pesky info-dumps.  Damnit! Weber - ease up on those, huh?  Click on the cover for the prologue - this is why I want to keep reading....

One more book that I'm taking in smallish doses -
The First Casualty
by Mike Moscoe aka Mike Shepherd
Interesting SciFi, telling a story from two main character's pov.
No excerpt from Shepherd's website - which needs to be updated.  According to his book page this is out of print, and yet I just bought it recently at a bookstore - brand new, not used.

Well - that's enough for now.  I'm tired, frankly.

The Moths of Miller Place by J.A. Campbell - micro review

I have been reading and enjoying all kinds of Doc and Brown stories, but for some odd reason, I can't find where I've actually reviewed them...which is weird, because of course, when you want to support a writer you love, you review their work, help get some notice about them even if your blog is a very teeny tiny blog amidst an ocean of book blogs.  (wow, see how wordy I can get? sometimes I surprise myself).

The Moths of Miller Place
a Doc the Vampire Hunting Dog story

Cover - I  happen to know that the model for this cover is actually a REAL dog, and she's a border collie, owned by the author, who is a multi-talented woman.  But - back to the cover.  Look at the background, the little moths flying around looking so harmless....the dog giving that special look - THE EYE.  Oh,  yeah, the, the cover rocks.  And let me tell you - sometimes e-books have THE WORST covers.  So I am happy when I see a  good cover on an e-book.

The Moths of Miller Place is one of a few Doc short stories.  In this story, Doc and his human (Kevin) and their new friend (Jake, a wolf-human aka werewolf) are traveling together.  They stop at a place that rents cabins, and rent a cabin.  The owner leaves them with a dire warning - "Don't turn on your lights after dark".  and in a lower voice..."It's the migration."  That's all she says about it, like they know what that means.  Of course, they're thinking she's kind of whacko, except later, another person gives them pretty much the same warning.
Only this guy adds that the migration is about moths, and " t'aint natural".  {Now I don't know about you - but I've never been worried about moths - although they do freak my granddaughter out.}
These moths...aren't your everyday moths.  But like moths everywhere, they are attracted to light.  When they get in where the light is...oh boy.

Now this was a fun story - and like all of her Doc and Brown stories, Campbell really sounds like she knows what a dog would think like.  Not only does her dog character interact with his human, but there is always one or two other animal characters that have bit parts in these fun short stories.  And the conversations between Doc and in this case, the cat that belongs to the landlady are fun to read.  All of Campbell's animal characters sound and behave as I would like to imagine them to think.  She has a real talent for putting herself in the animals' heads.  Amazing.

I enjoyed this story very much and recommend it to lovers of fantasy, urban fantasy, light horror (haha, is that a real genre?  it should be), and animal fiction.  This and the other dog stories she writes has a wonderful mix of horror, fantasy and animals.  The best of all genres.

If you've been reading any of J.A. Campbell's work, then you already know that here is a woman who can write.  She comes up with great stories, with interesting twists - some of them are serious topics done with humor (not slaptick,  humor for humor's sake, but a chuckle here and there in the midst of a situation). Her stories range from a series about a high school senior who was turned into a vampire against her will - (a girl who didn't even believe in vampires), to a two character series of books featuring dogs (Doc the Vampire Hunting dog and Brown, the Ghost Hunting dog), to a soon to be release story of an Arabian Horse (the breed, not set in Arabia) and the teen who travels into different worlds with her (Tales of the Traveler), to a series about a teen who has been 'relocated', and steampunk; along with her other novels she also is co-founder of InkWolf Press.

Campbell is also taking on the role of editor for Steampunk Trails.  If you think you have something to offer, take a look at this link.

Blog Tour and Giveaway links

one of my favorite couple of characters happen to be dogs.  That's right.
Dogs.
One is a vampire hunting dog named Doc.  His story takes place in contemporary time, and his human is named Kevin.  There are quite a few short stories available featuring Doc and friends.

Kira_Brown2The other dog is named Brown and her human is Elliott.  Brown has a way with ghosts.  Being border collies, both dogs have this thing called....
The Eye
if you've ever been stared down by a herder dog, you will know what I'm referring to.
anyway there is currently a blog tour happening that's featuring Brown.  I've read all (i'm pretty sure I've read all of them) of Brown's stories, and they are very entertaining - especially if you enjoy dogs.  You will recognize doggy behavior in these stories.
The entire blog tour, complete with links is listed on Campbell's website, but just in case...

Intro - June 11th @ J.A. Campbell
Part 1 - June 12th @ Sam Knight
Part 2 - June 13th @ Bea's Book Nook
Part 3 - June 14th @ Amaleen Ison
Part 4 - June 15th @ Jen Wylie
Part 5 - June 16th @ David Riley
Interview with Brown - June 17th @ Anne Michaud (can I just say, I love when people do interviews in a character's pov - shows the imagination off a bit, and is just very fun)
J.A. Campbell (aka Julie) has quite a variety of writing projects that she's finished, and is always working on new projects.  On top of being a very talented writer with all kinds of characters living in her brain, she is the caretaker of cats, an intense dog named Kira (the dog is a border collie, i.e. - intense) and is a horsewoman.  No, she doesn't turn into a horse at full moons, nor does she have a horse head, or a tail...she owns a horse and rides Triska as much as she can.  Girl is living the life; horse, dog, cats, books in print and a sailor boyfriend who is absent enough to be in love with.  (haha - that's my weird take on relationships - if you're apart regularly, you appreciate each other more.)
Keep your eyes open for J.A. Campbell - there will be more coming from her.  everytime I hear about a new project, I'm happy because I KNOW it's going to be interesting and fun to read.

other works by J.A. Campbell
This is the Clanless series - a third is in the works.  Teen vampire, learning to maintain and keeping her friends safe.

Serpent Queen is a steampunk style of short story - novella - that I would love to see more of. A vampire pirate who's airship is attacked.

J.A. Campbell has many other works available online as free reads or e-books.  You won't find ridiculous prices for these books either - like $14.99.  Nope - all of the e-books are affordable and all are great reads.  Visit her website for more info on all available and upcoming projects.

The Giveaway  is for Science Fiction Trails #10 - which I can assure you is a very fun mag full of short stories that run the range in styles.  A great issue to have - I have a copy and love it.  Click on the cover and go enter the drawing.

It's Monday, and I've been slacking on the readin' ...

I feel like I slept all weekend long.  I went to a parade - Sebastopol's (California) Apple Blossom parade - where my grandson was participating with his preschool.  There's nothing like trying to get to another town in the morning in time to catch your grandson...the traffic...the parking...we were actually lucky.  We found parking in store parking lot, very close to the beginning of the parade.  My son drove and let us out while he looked for parking.  we got down to the sidewalk just in time to see my grandson in the bed of the pick up truck,
where he was kind of just looking around until he noticed me.  Then he shouted out "Grandma!!!!"  Very loudly.  Precious, I felt so good.  Then he saw his grandpa, and then his cousin, who I was holding.  He shouted out our names (or titles).

We were worried that my son was going to miss him, but it turned out that he parked and walked straight to the sidewalk, then down to where we were so he was able to see his son and call out to him.  We didn't stay much longer, because it was getting hot, my husband's back was bothering him quite a bit.  My granddaughter wasn't sad about leaving at all - she just cared about seeing her cousin.  So we left the parade kind of early and ended up coming home, where I proceeded to nap the day away.
I tried to read - slept.  Ate lunch and tried to read again....slept.  woke up and walked around a bit,  the husband took our granddaughter home and got our grandson ready to go to a baby shower (where his cousin was going to be) and I slept some more.  Woke up for dinner and then tried to read a bit more when....guess.  No really - guess!  I slept some more!  Then I ended up going to bed at around 1130 - ended up awake - wide awake.  Watched Saturday Night Live...and then slept.
Sunday was  pretty much a repeat - without the parade.  I read, dozed, ate, dozed, tried to read, dozed....and now it's 3 a.m. and I'm wide awake.
Of course, now that I've decided to post this, I'm feeling sleepy....

Hosted by Sheila of Book Journey - It's Monday is all about sharing what we've been reading.  I'd say more, but I'm tired now.  ;)

On my last Monday post, week before last, I had just finished reading The Burn Zone.  I had
two weeks in a row of reading three books.  Wow.  And now I'm back to my new normal of one book a week...except that this past two weeks, I ended up reading only one book...
The one book I finished reading was a book I didn't even have on my radar for reading...

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.  I finished it, enjoyed it for the humor in the narration.
It was very hard for me to concentrate on this with the crap goin on in Boston (my youngest son has recently moved to Boston)

Things have been resolved there (as much as possible), my son and his love are safe and happy, We're all as healthy as possible and I have started reading
The Midnight Blue-light Special by Seanan McGuire.
On the Kindle, I've downloaded and started reading Payoff by Alex Hughes
and
Penny Dread Tales 3 - which contains a story by
J.A. Campbell. (a Brown, Ghost Hunter story) titled Brown Goes Full Steam.
What's next?
Who Knows?
I'm just going to go one book at a time (hahahaha, yeah...right!)
for a while

Me?!? Reading more YA than once in a while? (awkward phrasing, I know...)

I've mentioned a few times, that other than my favorite authors, or the special YA authors that I read - I'm not really into Young Adult fiction. I usually keep my YA reading to authors I already have a history of reading, or writers like J.A. Campbell.

Possibly because of Campbell, I've had my brain opened up a bit to a few other YA novelists...and I've recently bought a couple YA books ALL ON MY OWN.

This week, I had planned to read some books I've just received, when I remembered I should read a book that's been on my shelves for a while.  I made myself a promise to do this at least once a month - read some languishing novels.

So I grabbed Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.  this book has been out since 2010.  I started reading it tonight and in a couple hours I ended up almost a third of the way through.

And parts of it are funny.  This character has a funny sense of humor, even though you know there are some dark moments coming up.

I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying this.
hmmmmmmm.....

Teaser Tuesday!

Some of my favorite writers are writing new and exciting things.

Ilona Andrews (the hubby/wife team) are is continuing the Kate Daniels series and starting a completely new series with Avon - one that doesn't fit any of the current genres... this is something I'm looking forward to.

J.A. Campbell - writer of The Clanless series (there is a third Clanless novel coming) and those fun Doc the Vampire Hunting Dog, is continuing the Dog trend by writing more about Doc's ancester, Brown.  Brown is the dog who helps her owner hunt ghosts...and therefore she is Brown, the Ghost Hunting dog; and there's a SciFi element coming soon to Brown's story.  I love SciFi.  I'm telling you, this woman can write.  She writes fantasy, urban fiction, urban dog fiction, historical dog fiction, young adult, steampunk, dragons, anything she puts her mind on, she can make a story out of it.  Watch out for whatever she comes up with next!  I'm anticipating .....

I'm excited about these upcoming new reads....
but in the meantime...

Tuesday Teaser is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.  We read, We post a snippet, We tease.
No spoilers

I've been reading Dead Things
page 185

' "You've got this look on your face like a dog trying to figure out physics."
"Just thinking. Looks different in the daytime." And when it's not on fire with a burning Toyota  jammed through the front. '

A little different, and interesting... I'm enjoying this so far.  :)

Tonight's LOL Catz are from the Cheezeburger site.  The only one I captioned is the one I used as the Teaser Tuesday badge...  but I wish that I had come up with the other Basement Cat captions, aren't they good?

Pimpin' out the books wink, grin and a review of Summer Break Blues by J.A. Campbell

A while ago I read a very good book, e-book, titled Senior Year Bites by J.A. Campbell.  To be perfectly honest, I was able to read the book before it was published, so I feel lucky and honored that the author trusted me to read it before editing, etc.  That's gotta be hard to do, put your book out there.  However - Campbell is one of those authors that I think can write, no matter what the genre or subject matter.  So far, even though I'm not a major YA fan, I've enjoyed everything I've read by her.

(click on book cover for excerpt)

J.A. Campbell  has written a sequel, titled Summer Break Blues, which I have also read, and loved.  The ending- the ending is so cool.  Summer Break Blues is currently available and if you go to this page, there is 'round-up' of all the websites you can go to for a chance to win a copy.
But if you don't win, don't despair, because this is an e-book, and one of those reasonably priced e-books, and so is  very affordable.  Available for purchase at all the big book stores online, as well as Smashwords and Decadent Publishing.  All the info and links are on Ms Campbell's site.

Love this cover.  Click on it for an excerpt

There is going to be a third book in this series - The Clanless is the series title - but I can't remember the name, or even if there is a name for the third novel yet.  My memory is not so good at times, to be honest.  She might have told me the title, but she also had to tell me the title of Summer Break Blues a couple a few times.  She's so patient with me, lol.
Senior Year Bites is the story of Meg, who has survived a vicious attack during an illfated game of Truth or Dare.  She picked Dare.  It bit her in the....well, it BIT her.  This is the story of how she and her friends come to the realization that she is, indeed, vampire. She'd been having all these weird symptoms, and they seemed to be getting worse instead of better.  Eventually they come to the vampire connection.  Something of course, that she always thought was a horror story figure. Of course, not many of us would be so quick to think when we're sick, that we might be turning into a vampire! With the help of her friends, who she doesn't at first want to involve, she manages to not only survive her senior year of high school, but keep her condition from her mom and others, feed, explore her powers, and then....there is a major complication.  So - first novel - brilliantly done - dialogue (they SOUND like teens) and attitudes, as well as differing characters.  If you're interested I reviewed it here.

The second novel - Summer Break Blues takes up after the events of Senior Year Bites.  They graduate, and make plans....only there are complications.
Ann's parents have disappeared, so the friends plan a road trip to help find the parents.  Only Ann is behaving rather strangely.  And Meg keeps having to deal with this crazy fae - they're not happy with her since the events of her senior year (spoilers for first book, so no details). With Summer Break Blues - great title for a brilliant sequel, by the way - J.A. Campbell has done it again.  Taken a group of friends and not only put them in danger, with a mystery to solve, as well as parents to hopefully save from danger, but now relationships are shifting, and Meg is feeling strange about a certain someone who is supposed to be in love with a certain friend, and oh boy, things are becoming awkward and might become even more so, but Meg is trying to be good, trying not feed on her friends, or attack them physically OR verbally while she fights off attacks and still tries to help her friend find her parents - even though her friend is acting more odd than normal. Talk about peer pressure.  A few of her friends expect superhero behaviour out of her, while Ann seems to expect something else.
J.A.Campbell knows how to make her teen characters sound like teens.  She can write moments that are awkward and romancey at the same time - just like when you first realized as a teen that you're attracted to someone and they just might be attracted to you, and yet....you shouldn't act on it for one reason or another....yet the romance in no way overshadows the action or fantasy elements of the book.  The book is all about the mission - find Ann's parents; and the aftermath of the mission.   The changes in the friends' relationships, the new friends (from Senior Year Bites) and even newer finds - as well as Meg's discoveries about herself, her powers and her dangers.
Because while the friends and crew are on their mission, Meg is still learning about herself and her powers - and has questions...like why hasn't she ever come across her 'maker'?  Things would be nice if there was a guide of some sort, so she didn't have to fumble along with her friends (well meaning as they are) possibly putting them in danger from herself and yet needing them.
There's a lot packed into this book - relationships, danger, knowledge, changes, sadness and happiness and everything in between.
Good read, I encourage reading this - especially if you want something fresh - a bit different than the average urban fantasy where the main character doesn't seem to have any female friends and yet has all these guys after her.  Refreshing with good action scenes, suspense, twists and some great plotting.  You'll like it whether you're a teen or a twenty-something, thirty-something - even past 50, because there are some sweet moments that are nostalgic of teen years threaded throughout the tale.  Not the vampire stuff (not for me anyway, never had to deal with that, *wink*) but those moments of young crushes or love just starting out. :)  Can't wait to read the third novel.  It's going to be good.
*Trivia moment here - before Senior Year Bites had a publisher, there was a very cool cover an artist friend of hers had done for her.  The artist is very talented, and with this particular cover really 'got' the main character.  I do like the published covers - they are beautifully done, but I still think this original unofficial cover really captured Meg, her personality, and the way I would have pictured a teen vampire trying to stay un-noticed.
Here is the original cover by S.N. Holl.

Really - check out the blood, the gum, the earphones, all the little details.   Really captures the teen vampire trying to be under the radar, and yet being a TEEN.
J.A. Campbell is the author of many, many stories - short stories and novels.  She has an online serial that has evolved into a few published e-books/novellas titled about Doc, The Vampire Hunting Border Collie (drop down menu gives access to free online shorts); a six part story about Tina who is a teen transplanted from big city to small desert ghost towns and experiences first love as well as time travel and bandits; she's written a steampunk novella that is to be published; as well as short stories that are in a variety of anthologies. She has been working on a fantasy currently titled Arabian Dreams, a full length novel that needs to be published, I hope it gets picked up so people can enjoy her novel.  Girl HAS to write, it's just a part of who she is.  She's also been known to take some pretty cool photos, works with horses, dogs, has cats (or, rather, they try to own her-you know how cats can get) and has written the occasional comic.

It's Monday, and thanks for the Holiday

It's been only two full weeks of work and I'm exhausted.  Ugh.  By the end of each week so far, I'm feeling like I have a fever (I don't) and feeling so much pain and exhaustion - then again - it's kind of cool, because at least I have a job.  It's not the highest paying job, and the benefits aren't that great - but it's a job.  And because I'm working there, My grandkids get to attend if they have to.  Which is a nice perk.  We used it on Friday- my granddaughter went to Kinder care (one hour) and then to day care.  She had fun the entire time she was there.  She did art projects, played with other kids, and seemed to enjoy her self very much.  Then, when it was time to go - she saw her Papa (grandpa) pull up to pick us up.  She grabbed her backpack and cartwheeled to the door, yelling "papa!"  Her energy - we all need it. :)
So it's Sunday night - late, I'm still a little tired and very glad I don't have to work tomorrow - but still glad I have a job.

It is That Time again - It's Monday, What Are You Reading? Hosted  by Sheila of Book Journey - full guidelines are available on her website. (click on cute boy picture for link)
My reading wasn't especially inspired this week, though I did read a pretty fun short story.

Finished Reading Last Week;

The Moths of Miller Place
e-book, short
fantasy
currently available

hell of a good short story - would love to see a full length novel sometime in the future featuring Doc - Vampire Hunting Dog.

What I'm Reading Now:

Another Kind of Dead
urban fantasy
available now

Good so far - not sure why I put off reading it so long.  I'm enjoying it, but it's going to be put aside again, because hey- Ann Aguirre just released her latest....

Endgame
SciFi
available now

Soooo excited, and at the same time kinda of sad - because this is the final Sirantha Jax episode.  The last of a very cool SciFi series.  Well - glad is was written, glad I found it, and glad I went with the impulse to buy - cause I've enjoyed each of the novels.

No plans for next week's reading - If I happen to finish reading these current reads, I've got another SciFi book here waiting for me too open - if I'm in the mood for SciFi after Endgame.  We'll just have to see how it goes.  I do know, that the last month has been a very good month for book reading - seems most of the novels I pick are extremely enjoyable to read novels.  Only two have been bleh style for me, and I put them aside.  Not wasting time on things I don't enjoy.

none of this week's lolcatz are my creations - All are available from ICanHasCheezburgers.com
