I've just started a book, so I'm going to just post a random snippet.  Usually I find one on the page I'm reading.

I'm reading:

Ghost & Echoes by Lyn Benedict

Ghosts and  Echoes is the second of the Shadows Inquiries series.  The first was Sins and Shadows and a pretty good book.  I have hopes for this sequel, especially since I already have the third novel - Gods and Monsters -  here (bought when it came out, even though I hadn't yet read the second) and I see that a fourth novel - Lies and Omens is available.  I haven't seen much buzz about this series, - though I have to admit that I haven't been cruising the web lately much, but still, usually you notice novels.  But I really liked the first novel, and if the others are anywhere near the first novel, then this series deserves some buzz.  Lyn Benedict also writes as Lane Robins, and has a LiveJournal & the website.

teasertuesday and the day of seconds.....

Monday was the Day of Firsts {and I'll admit that I was a bit worried about all the firsts that were happening for me and my girls} and now Tuesday will be the Day of Seconds.  It will be the second day of my new job, the second day of my Granddaughter's first year of Kindergarden and the second day my daughter works with me supervising the children at lunch. She's also taking charge of the "breakfast" program, where the young kinders all meet in the multipurpose room, have breakfast and stay all together waiting for their teachers.  40 children.  wow.  

The first day of school went extremely well.  My daughter says she was more upset and nervous than her daughter.  There was just one moment, when the other kids were saying good bye to their parents and walking in that my granddaughter almost broke down and said,"I don't want you to leave yet!".  So my daughter walked her inside the room, stayed for a few minutes, until things settled down and the kids had circle time then tiptoed out the room.  I'm so proud of my girls.  Then when we both saw the new kindergardner at lunchtime she was happily walking in line, waving to us with a big grin on her face, and just having the time of her life.  During recess she was helping kids find things and just having fun running around.  My daughter is my only daughter, and she has my first grandchild, who is also my only granddaughter - so it's kind of special - the only girl having the so far, only granddaughter.  I also have a grandson, from my middle son - which is pretty cool, because I now have one of each - granddaughter, grandson.  And it is soooo much fun having them in the family - they are also best cousins, behaving at times like best friends and frenemies and also like brother and sister.  They're pretty close right now.

My first day in the childcare program was so low key - so much easier than last year's job of running an afterschool homework program.  Of course, my pay is going to reflect this by being at least $2 an hour less, but I guess I should just be happy I'm working.

So yesterday - the Day of Firsts - went pretty smoothly.

and now - I'm going to go ahead and take part in Teaser Tuesday - which I wasn't sure I was going to do this week.

I've been reading The Scorpio Races - started it, didn't get very far because I was in the middle of a few other novels, but this is the week I'm going to finish it - I can FEEL IT!  So I'm going to grab a few sentences and share them with you.

'Puck

     Based upon my experience on the beach the day before, I form a new plan.  Brave high tide, with its possibility of water horses swimming up from the ocean, instead of riding later, at low tide, with its certainty of water horses menacing me on the beach.'

Interesting novel so far, told from a few points of few, present tense, yet all first person.  I like it.

Teaser Tuesday

On my way to post a Teaser Tuesday meme, I stopped by the LOLCat site and got a little carried away.  Ended up captioning a couple of pics, and posting to my folder, etc.  Forgot all about the work I had to that's been piling up...forgot about my Tuesday Teaser post, forgot about even reading the book I was going to start...

I finally remembered what I was trying to do... so here I am now.  Only I haven't yet started the book, not even sure what I'm going to read.

I might read Except The Queen by Jan Yolen and Midori Snyder.  It's a type of fairytale - there are exiled fae featured.  So here are some sentences from the second chapter...


     'In the Greenwood, the Fae to not write accounts of their own doing. Yes, we have bards whose entire lives are spent composing heroic verses  to praise those we claim as heroes  or those great and terrible loves that have nearly destroyed whole clans. Yes we have history.  But we don't care much for personal memory.'


This is not going to be a light and airy fairytale.  This is going to be dark - with evil doings.  Just skimming the first few pages I can already see this.  In addition, the writing is pretty good - it flows.

Teaser Tuesdays!

No Spoilers!  very important

The main book I'm reading this week (sometimes I read at least three books at a time) is Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi.  I hear (or rather, I've READ) that this isn't his normal style of writing.  I like this - I also like Fuzzy Nation, which is another book that's not his norm.  So, still not sure if Scalzi will become a favorite author.  But it seems likely so far.

from page 133:

     'On the day we skipped to Roanoke, this is how Dad broke the news that we were lost. 

     "Because I know there are rumors already, let me say this first: We are safe," Dad said to the colonists. He stood on the platform where just a few hours earlier we had counted down the skip to Roanoke. "The Magellan is safe.  We are not in any danger at the moment."

     Around us, the crowd visibly relaxed.  I wondered how many of them caught the "at the moment" part.'

Scalzi writes that he purposely made this book young adult accessible - writing the main character from a seventeen year old girl's point of view.  I believe he also noted that it was one of the hardest books he's ever written - or something to that effect.  I think he did a pretty good job.
