Me?!? Reading more YA than once in a while? (awkward phrasing, I know...)

I've mentioned a few times, that other than my favorite authors, or the special YA authors that I read - I'm not really into Young Adult fiction. I usually keep my YA reading to authors I already have a history of reading, or writers like J.A. Campbell.

Possibly because of Campbell, I've had my brain opened up a bit to a few other YA novelists...and I've recently bought a couple YA books ALL ON MY OWN.

This week, I had planned to read some books I've just received, when I remembered I should read a book that's been on my shelves for a while.  I made myself a promise to do this at least once a month - read some languishing novels.

So I grabbed Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.  this book has been out since 2010.  I started reading it tonight and in a couple hours I ended up almost a third of the way through.

And parts of it are funny.  This character has a funny sense of humor, even though you know there are some dark moments coming up.

I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying this.
hmmmmmmm.....

  1. Love it! Your post was totally worth it for the funny kitty pics alone but your amazement that you're enjoying more YA than expected topped off the cake. I've heard the HEX HALL series IS suppose to be awesome. Been on my "check out soon" list for some time, just never made my way over to it just yet... ~whistles~. Enjoy! ^_^

    1. Thanks, Gina. I also love funny animal pics with captions. Call me corny. But I love 'em - especially those with twisted captions. ;)

I'm still suprised that I'm liking YA - I'm wondering if it's because YA in general is growing more adult like (just like our kids in general - the world is definitely changing) or if it's because things are more open now, or if I've just been lucky and been gifted with/chose some good books. Even when I was 12 or 14 I never read YA. Went straight from Nancy Drew at 10 years to Hawaii, Captains and Kings, Gone with the Wind...stuff like that. Y'know - light reading, lol.

  2. I try to pick up some YA once in a while. I've had some that I adored, but there are still some that seem really awful and then I don't want to read another one for awhile! I'm glad you found one you are enjoying. :)

    1. I think I've been expecting lots of teen angst and TSTL moments, bad decisions, etc. So far, most of the YA I've read has been entertaining, even if the characters are very young (compared to me). I'm going to try to read YA more often, if only to keep on top of what is in our own library for the teens we have. :)
