It's Monday!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday again, post-father's day - and man, was it a hot day! We gathered at my sister's house to have a barbeque and hang out for a bit. I was pretty wrung out from the heat and the little grandchildren seemed to be as whiny and irritable as possible.

Until Ice Cream Time.

Ice Cream Time is when everyone is finally relaxed and sitting around in the heat enjoying those bowls of icecream.......

YuMmY!

IceCream Time is very Important.

So back to Monday and the weekly meme hosted by Book Journey's Sheila.

My reading slowed down to a crawl....no real reason, because I was reading one of the most interesting books around. Devon Monk's newest series The Age of Steam begins with Dead Iron. Just finished it, and the review should be coming up later this week. The book is available to buy July 5, 2011 and I can honestly say I loved the whole reading experience with this novel. A combination of Steampunk/Western (the best kind of steampunk, I think) there are also some other paranormal creatures in the novel. Weres, "The Strange", etc. Combines to make a magical steampunk story. Devon Monk does it again - proves that she can write in a variety of "voices" and storylines.

I continued to occasionally read Flip This Zombie, but like the first novel (Married With Zombies) in this series, I'm starting slow and haven't yet felt like I need to sit down and read this novel through. It hasn't completely grabbed my attention yet.

Suddenly though, I felt the need to re-visit Sci-Fi/Space reading. So I found the book that I had started a month or so ago - Valor's Choice by Tanya Huff. I usually have so many books going at one time, that I frequently lay aside a book until it starts grabbing my attention again...and now I'm in the mood for SciFi again. So in between bouts of Dead Iron and small interludes of Flip This Zombie, I found myself reading chapters at a time of Valor's Choice. Now I'm very close to the end of the novel, and I'm enjoying it very much.

I also had some fun tonight reading a few children's picture books to the grandkids.

Marvin K Mooney, Will You Please Go Now! by Dr. Seuss - as always, a fun rhyme of a story, pretty much telling Marvin to go home. However he can....just go. Entertaining and fun, as with all Dr. Seuss books. :)
Falling for Rapunzel by Leah Wilcox - a rather deaf Rapunzel mistakes the requests of a Prince....."Rapunzel...let down your hair.....she though he said...(underwear)..."

The Cat and The Bird In The Hat by Norman Bridwell - an obvious lesson about sharing and teamwork....it was okay, but ultimately...forgettable.

I have not set plans on what to read next week. I'd like to dive in the the second Kelly Meding novel, As Lie The Dead. I've been waiting to read that for quite a while....but I've just finished reading Dead Iron, which was an excellent book, so I need something totally different....A palate cleansing novel.

Well, we'll see what pops up.

I did just pick up Hexed, an anthology at least ONE good writer in it....

Ilona Andrews.

Really, Ilona Andrews is the only reason I bought this novel.

Hope it's good.

  1. I have seen a lot of people who just finished Hexed this week. I hope you enjoy it. I think most of your reading is slowing down. :)

Have a great week and stop by for a visit if you are interested in my Monday Post.

  2. I have been in a science fiction mood lately too. I just began re-reading the Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Thanks for letting me know about Dead Iron. I like steampunk and just ordered myself a copy.

I'll have to look for Falling for Rapunzel too. It sounds like something my students would like (and I would like to read to them).

My Monday Report is here. Happy reading!

  4. I'll look for Dead Iron. I've tried several steampunk novels and most have not quite lived up to what I expected. I did love Gail Carriger's novels, though, especially Souless!

  7. :) @ Leeswammes - I didn't explain myself right. Married with Zombies started out slow for me and then kicked ass. I think that is what's going to happen with Flip this Zombie. It just hasnt' yet grabbed my attention. Right now it's okay, but nothing spectacular.
