Monday Reading

It's that time again, Monday. Y'all know what that means....
hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, we get a chance to post about what we've read for the week, and the plan for the coming week's reading

I finished reading Waking the Witch, and the review will be up by Thursday, June 15th. I liked it, by the way.

I started and finished The Dead & The Gone. Finished it Sunday afternoon. Felt a little wiped after I finished it, because it's about total disasters, and a family's fight for survival. People DIE in this. Sorry. It's a YA, and it's pretty intense subject matter, because it makes you think - we're not prepared. at all.

Review is coming soon.

I started reading Jim C Hines' Goblin Quest. I need some books published in 2005, (between 2002 and 2008, actually) for the 2010 Countdown Reading Challenge. I don't have much longer to do this, and I have a feeling I'm not going to complete it. I tried though! Trying is important. I finished 2010, 2009, 2001!
Darkness Calls - I've started this novel also. I also need to read a few more POC authored/character books for the POC Reading Challenge. It's difficult to find POC authors in my favorite reading genre. Darkness Calls counts - for character and author.
Planned for the rest of the week (if I finish these two books) is to also resume and finish reading
Moonshine
Shadow Blade
Both Moonshine and Shadow Blade are written by POC women. My problem with these two books is that I started Moonshine right after I finished Magic Bleeds. Almost any book would pale in comparison to that novel. The next time I pick it up will be more satisfying. And Shadow Blade has a good premise, interesting characters...But it didn't "grab" me in the first chapter. I've found that doesn't necesarily mean I won't like the novel - it's possible I'll like it a lot - it's just hard for me to get interested in it based on the first chapter. But I'm willing to give it another try.
Sorry, no links right now. We had an "interesting" evening with the granddaughter. She was happily playing, messing around on the couch and fell off, bumping her cheek. I put on ice pack on her, but I think she might have a bruise in the morning - it looks a little red right now. I spent the last few hours just holding her with the ice pack (off and on) and just recently put her down, even though she fell asleep hours ago - right now I don't feel like searching for links. I hate when kids hurt themselves at anytime, but it seems to be worse when they're playing and laughing and then BOOM! That's actually a term that my grandson uses. when he falls down, he says "Elliott go boom" He refers to himself in the first person.

  1. I'm interested to read that series, The Last Survivors. I'm just wondering if there are any gory details, because if it's too much maybe I should read it in between happy, bubbly stories. Haven't heard of the two books you're reading this week. Hope you enjoy!

Check out my post, and feel free to enter my contest.

  2. I like Dead and the Gone a lot. Now you will have to get This World We Live In. Looks like you had a great week, hope this one is filled with more reading bliss.

  3. Cass - there aren't any graphic gory details - but there is mentions of dead bodies, rats and what they do, etc. It's all handled very matter of fact, without lots of description. Otherwise, I don't think I could have finished it - I could read this about adults, and it wouldn't have bothered me as much - but when I read about kids - it gets to me.

I do want to read the third book. It's supposed to be the second year after the disaster, so hopefully it'll show people adapting to a new way of life...well that's really what the first books is about - survival and adaptability. I'm looking forward to , or hoping for something more upbeat. These are good books, but they get to me.

  8. Mardel, funny you should come by and talk about Ann Aguirre being AKA Ava Gray and then you have read a book called The Dead and Gone that is YA about a family surviving disasters. Ann now has a debut novel that will be released that is post-apocalyptic YA called Razorland Info on book on author's page to check out, it sounds like something you might like to read as well. You had a good week and thanks for checking out mine earlier. I am enjoying the Carole Nelson Douglas but need to finish...
