It's Monday....and we're in the middle of a heat wave....."I'm mellllttttiiiiinnnnnggggg...."

It's been soooo hot.  We had one of the mildest springs - days of cool to cold mornings and nights and either mildly warm afternoons, or semi-cool afternoons.  Last week we even had a few days of rain - which was hard on the old bones, but still fun to listen to.  It's really nice to be able to listen to the rain when you've got time to just lounge about on your bed, reading and catnapping, covered up with your little dog next to you.... or cat.  I guess one day, my husband's dog climbed up and was laying against my legs, my little dog was behind my knees (his favorite spot to sleep) and my son's huge boxer mix climbed up and was stretched along my back....this apparently resulted in me being just about pinned into place, while the three dogs had most of the king-sized bed that we own.  Those guys - hogging the bed.
So we went from a wonderfully mild spring to a horrid heat wave over the last few days.  It was so hot, that we ended up breaking down and buying a small window a/c unit for our bedroom.  We have a slightly bigger one in our living room that I bought about 7 years ago - but it only kept the front of the house cool.
This new unit is quiet and just enough to keep the bedroom bearable in the extreme heat we've been having.  I'm thankful that we live 30 miles from the coast  -because tonight I swear I can feel a bit of the cool flog coming in.  It's nice to be able to feel a bit of coastal air instead of being stuck inland and not having the benefit of the fog coming in. I'm ever grateful to be living where I live.

Hosted by Sheila of Book Journey,  we visit each other's blogs and discover new things to read.  It's fun.

This week I read two novels, started another two and read one children's book to my grandson.  Actually - read more than one, but I can only remember one - because we've read it over and over and over throughout the last two years.

  1. Ooh the heat wave hasn't hit NY yet, and I'm not looking forward to it! I haven't read anything by Scalzi yet, but he's one author I'd like to get to soon. I just saw that another novel of his, Redshirts, won this year's Locus Award.

    1. Really? I thought NY just finished a heat wave. I know we don't have it as bad as a lot of areas in the country - we have the coast to help out. But when it's hot, it's hard to handle! :)

I haven't read Redshirts yet - I have read a few of his others and I think so far, The Android's Dream is my favorite because of the banter and sheer twistiness of events.

  2. We just had our heat wave break 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit then it would only drop a few degrees at night. I kind of liked it, but then the heat doesn't bother me like the cold does. We've had a lot of rain lately though and it really hasn't help just gets muggy. Luckily we live right next to Lake Ontario so we get breezes off the lake, and Hubby's family has a cottage so we can go down there if it gets to bad.

I love the cover for Sleeping in Eden. Also love the pic of the kitties sleeping on the dogs reminds me of our animals. :) Have a great week!

    1. See - now I used to absolutely love the cold - could not handle any heat. But now, the bones are aching horribly with the cold (arthritis in my spine and mostly likely other places) - so I'm beginning to enjoy sitting in the sun a little. But the very hot days still are hard - I hate when it feels like you're walking through an oven. :)

We used to have a kitten who would sleep with my little dog - they were buds. But she got bit by a bigger dog, ,.... breaks my heart. I think she just assumed dogs were okay because she was friends with my dog. Anyway - my older cat just puts dogs in their places right away. Starts off with just scratching their noses. Then likes to tease them by laying just out of reach - on the floor. If they get too close, he lazily reaches out and scratches them again. Evil cat. But he's still alive. :)

I like the cover of Sleeping in Eden also. It's a good book also, kind of sad though.

    1. It's good. I started off kind of not liking the lead character, but she grows on you. Girl has some ISSUES, but different issues than you normally read about from women lead characters. :)

  4. Makes heatwaves extra difficult to tolerate when it's so mild beforehand ... no preparation. At least with the aircon you should be a little more comfy.
Sleeping in Eden caught my eye, I have no idea what it's about but I might just go look it up because it's calling my name lol.
Have a great week and happy reading :)

PS dog pic gave me a laugh

    1. It's about... a marriage tha might be falling apart. suicide, a body found in a garage, and years before that, a young girl who can't decide between two boys... not sure how it all ties together yet - I can guess, but might be wrong. the writing is pretty good, although it does make me feel a bit bleak. Hoping for a halfway happy ending. I'm okay with non happy endings, but I don't want depressing endings either. :)

  5. Perhaps if you read The Dead of Winter, you will cool off. :)

Where are you with the heat wave? All we have in Pittsburgh is rain. Where are you summer?

ENJOY your week if you can, and stay cool.

    1. LOL - they were pretty cold throughout the book - didn't help me though.

We live in California, and though it was still very hot on Monday, I think we had the worst of it over the weekend. More might be coming, but happily, we live 30 miles from the coast, so that usually helps.

    1. Oh no! summer's weird. Are you in an area of the world where it's winter now? or just having strange weather?

Hang in there. I don't like to be too hot, or to be too cold. Just picky! :)

  7. Ooo Sleeping in Eden looks good! And The Android's Dream. My friend just told me to read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

We just had a heat wave, but now we are in this rainy, cool time. It feels like fall in July. Maybe this cool front is headed for you!

    1. Both of them were very good - in different ways.

I love cooler weather - but my bones don't. it's bad and good. :)

  8. We're having a heat wave too! 110 or so is predicted for today...and wouldn't you know that the condo management turned off our water for an hour yesterday afternoon? Working on a unit next to mine.

I hope they don't do more today! If they do, I'm out of here. But I've already had my shower and made my iced tea...and filled up pitchers of water...in addition to the bottled water.

    When we're prepared, things don't happen...lol.

I didn't know that Liz Rosenberg had written a book like Monster Mama...sounds like a horror read. I'll have to check it out.

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. That is something I don't miss about apartment living ---- oh wait, there's only ONE thing I miss about apartment living and that's not having to pay a separate garbage bill - everything else, from parking to towing to crazed neighbors and a feeling of no privacy....that all sucks. Might be different in apartments that charge more for rent...but we could never afford those. I'm glad to be in a house, even if we pay more than we should.....we need to find a cheaper house. :)

I think you've found the solution - stay prepared and the water will stay on. :)

  9. I hate the heat. We often have very, very hot summers, but not this one. Oddly. So many people are burning up!

    1. It's been a while since I've seen the weather map of the whole nation being so hot so early - couple weeks ago California and the states above us seemed to be the only mild spots in the country.

But that's the weather for you - goes in waves and cycles.
